Marine plastic pollution is one of today’s most dire problems”. The opening words of Giuseppe Ungherese, manager of Greenpeace’s antipollution campaign, at the Genoa International Boat Show’s Teatro del Mare (Sea Theatre) during a conference organised to explain the results of their latest campaign, “Plastic Radar”.

Greenpeace’s “Plastic Radar” initiative took place this Summer, inviting everyone to signal the presence of plastic waste on beaches, underwater or seen floating on the sea’s surface. A campaign encouraging waste notifications via WhatsApp. The results are very positive. “From June to August” explained Ungherese, “an impressive 3236 people keen to safeguard our seas sent notifications, reaching more than 8900 overall”.

The presence of plastic waste along Italy’s coastlines is often due to the damaging behaviour of individuals but food and drink multinationals need to take responsibility for the ever-increasing level of contamination. Large companies cannot ignore the difficulties involved in recycling all the plastic they spread throughout the market in volumes that only seem to grow. They need to start providing alternatives to consumers that steer away from single-use plastic“, concluded Giuseppe Ungherese.

Events in the afternoon included the Italian Sailing Federation presenting the first Italian World Cup Series event, one of the most important dates of the year which will take place twice in Genoa, in the same location as the Genoa International Boat Show. On stage, alongside the Italian Sailing Federation president Francesco Ettorre, were Italian Yacht Club president Nicolò Reggio, mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci and local champion Benedetta Di Salle, fresh off the boat from the World Cup Series in Enoshima, Japan.
