ITALIAN MARINE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION CONFINDUSTRIA NAUTICA: YACHTING AND DESIGN TAKE CENTRE STAGE ON THE OPENING DAY OF MILAN’S DESIGN SHOW, THE SALONE DEL MOBILE

DESIGNERS DISCUSS MADE IN ITALY EXCELLENCE AND THE LATEST CHALLENGES FOR YACHTING AND FURNITURE DESIGN

On the opening day of Milan’s international design show, the Salone del Mobile.Milano, the Italian Marine Industry Association Confindustria Nautica and the Genoa International Boat Show led the opening panel entitled NAUTICA e DESIGN: le influenze positive del Made in Italy” (“Yachting and Design: positive influences Made in Italy”), organised by Salone del Mobile.Milano, in cooperation with the Genoa International Boat Show, as part of the design and furniture show’s events programme, Round Tables 2024.

The panel, moderated by Luisa Bocchietto, architect and member of the Steering Committee of the Genoa International Boat Show’s Design Innovation Award, was opened by a key note by Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano and, for the second year in a row, President of the Design Innovation Award Jury: “Yachting is an increasingly interesting sector for furniture: yachts are houses on water. It is a sector that represents an excellence of Made in Italy design and this has witnessed an incredible evolution thanks also to the contribution of exceptional architects“.

We were delighted to accept the invitation by the Salone del Mobile.Milano to organise this round table together, further underlining the synergy between yachting and design and enhancing the bond between the Salone del Mobile and the Genoa International Boat Show,” stressed Marina Stella, General Manager of Confindustria Nautica, the Italian Marine Industry Association. “The two events share an innate ability to catalyse international attention on sectors that represent excellence and that are incubators of the latest trends and innovations. The union that ties yachting and design finds its most apt expression in the Design Innovation Award, the prize ceremony we established up in 2020 with the aim of promoting the excellence of the yachting industry present every year during the Genoa International Boat Show and enhancing its commitment to innovation, research, formal and technical quality, and sustainability“.

For several years now, a great deal of interaction has developed between the two sectors, sharing a heritage of excellence when it comes to research in the field of materials, components and finishes, all key elements in bringing the world of interior design closer and closer to the nautical world. Designers with different backgrounds and experience contribute constantly to the industry’s success, with new suggestions for what it means to experience life on board, and to the international dissemination of Made in Italy quality.

During the panel held at the Salone del Mobile.Milano, international designers and representatives of the Italian yachting industry shared their ideas and perspectives, including Chiara Massarani, Architect, Senior Project Director at ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, Stefano de Vivo, Chief Commercial Officer at the Ferretti Group and Managing Director of Wally, Francesca Attuoni, Interior Design Manager at Baglietto and Sergio Buttiglieri, Style Director at Sanlorenzo.

Stefano de Vivo emphasised how the relationship with designers has led the yachting industry to evolve. “Designers have brought their experience into our products and thus helped us focus on what is truly important for our customers. For our part, we have shared our know-how of the yachting world. These two contributions have generated interesting results. It is a privilege to see how the union of design and yachting is leading to such different forms compared to the past.

Francesca Attuoni went on to emphasise that “the combination of nautical craftsmanship and Italian design can be found in the customisation and craftsmanship at the heart of the yachting industry, which, just like in the companies behind Italy’s largest brands, can also be found in our yachts, products that will travel all over the world, and this certainly represents an increasingly sought-after element‘.

I am happy to talk about yachting at the Salone del Mobile, which I have been attending for 40 years now, as this is the world I started from,” stated Sergio Buttiglieri. “I have always considered it essential to connect the world of boating with the great contemporary furnishing brands. In this we have succeeded and it is no coincidence that today we bring our customers to Milan in person to choose the best products directly in the showrooms or headquarters of the largest furniture brands”.

On the design front, Chiara Massarani noted that “the nautical world has taught us how to read space, because even in dimensions that are not those of civil architecture, it is still possible to design emotional, interesting and above all flexible spaces. Convertible furnishings, such as lounge areas that become dining rooms, innovative spaces that we have even started to apply in homes”.

Luisa Bocchietto drew the conclusions of the panel, emphasising how the synergy between yachting and design is clear: “in recent years the nautical world has evolved a lot in terms of performance and interiors, and for these reasons it has a lot to draw from furniture companies. At the same time, designers working in the furniture world find a lot of inspiration from the nautical world, which forces them to work with spaces in a more careful and creative way, while also conceiving ideas in direct contact with nature“.

The ‘Nautica e Design’ (Yachting and Design) talk was part of a programme of events organised by the Italian Marine Industry Association Confindustria Nautica to celebrate the Made in Italy Day promoted by the Italian Ministry for Business and Industry. As a part of this same programme, tomorrow 17th April, in Rome, in the Press Room of the Chamber of Deputies, one of the two houses that make up the Italian Parliament, a conference will be held, organised by the Italian Marine Industry Association and entitledNautica da diporto: eccellenza produttiva, figure professionali e nuovi fabbisogni” (“Yachting excellence and today’s needs: from production to industry professionals”).
